Rpchristain, Good news from Sheffield & good news for you, trainee toolmakers, congratulations! Just want to say that there has been a major step change in machine shop practice & toolmaking in the last twenty five years or so.
I came into engineering when punches & dies where made with die filers & punch shapers, these are completely museum pieces now. After that it was optical ginders & diaformed wheels, split dies, etc & now these have almost completely disappeared. Wire eroding, punch type EDM & CNC milling have transformed tool & die work.
You will learn a lot from the old style text books but most of it won't be relevant in any modern toolroom. Best of luck, enjoy the trade.
